Research conducted by KERISDIMAS BIO-CON in the Garahan Forest Management Resort area, under the Perhutani Forest Management Unit of Jember, revealed that this forest continues to serve as an important habitat for various bee species from the family Apidae. Through explorations at several observation points, the research team successfully documented 8 bee species with relatively abundant populations.
The presence of bees within an ecosystem plays a highly crucial role. In addition to serving as primary pollinators, bees also contribute to maintaining forest ecosystem balance through their interactions with various flowering plant species. These findings indicate that the Garahan area still provides food resources and habitat conditions that support bee populations.
Interestingly, the recorded bees were not limited to social bee species such as Apis cerana, but also included solitary bees such as Xylocopa and Ceratina, each of which plays unique roles in pollination processes.

💡 Interesting Insight: Not all bees possess stingers. Some species, such as Hypotrigona, are known as stingless bees, which are harmless to humans yet remain highly effective pollinators for plants.
Bees are often referred to as the “supporters of ecosystem life” because approximately one-third of global food production depends on pollination by insects, especially bees.
These findings demonstrate that the Garahan forest area still maintains environmental quality capable of supporting bee populations as natural pollinating agents. Therefore, preserving flowering vegetation and minimizing habitat disturbance are important steps in maintaining the sustainability of forest ecosystems.
