Early Conservation Education through the BIWAKI Program in Bondowoso

KERISDIMAS BIO-CON once again carried out a community service activity through the Birdwatching For Kids (BIWAKI) program at SDN Sucolor 2 Maesan, Bondowoso. This activity served as an educational initiative aimed at introducing the importance of biodiversity conservation to students from an early age through an interactive and enjoyable learning approach.

Located near the forest area managed by the Bondowoso Forest Management Unit (KPH Bondowoso), the school has great potential as a natural learning environment. Through the BIWAKI program, students were encouraged to understand that forests are not merely collections of trees, but also habitats for various bird species that play essential roles in maintaining ecosystem balance.

The activity began with an educational presentation introducing birds, their habitats, behaviors, and the importance of environmental conservation. Various bird species were introduced to the students, including the Sooty-headed Bulbul (Pycnonotus aurigaster), which is commonly found around residential areas, sunbirds (Cinnyris sp.) that serve as natural pollinators, and the endangered Javan Hawk-Eagle (Nisaetus bartelsi), a national wildlife symbol of Indonesia.

Presentation of Material

In addition to classroom learning, the students also participated in direct birdwatching activities in nature using binoculars and bird identification guides. This hands-on experience allowed them to observe birds in their natural environment, study wildlife behavior firsthand, and develop basic observation and scientific thinking skills.

Through this activity, KERISDIMAS BIO-CON hopes that students will not only become familiar with different bird species, but also grow into a younger generation that cares deeply about environmental conservation and the preservation of biodiversity around them.
