Improving Teacher Competence through Animal Specimen Preservation Training at MTs Nurul Islam Silo

As an effort to support the improvement of Biology Science learning quality, a community service program titled “Teacher Competency Training through Animal Specimen Preservation Training for Teachers of MTs Nurul Islam Silo” was conducted at MTs Nurul Islam Silo.

This activity aimed to enhance teachers’ competencies, skills, and knowledge in animal specimen preservation techniques as practical learning media for Biology education. The program became an important part of supporting more interactive, contextual, and experience-based learning processes.

MTs Nurul Islam Silo is a formal educational institution under the supervision of the Nurul Islam Silo Islamic Boarding School. In Biology Science learning activities, the availability of animal specimens is highly important to support students’ practical sessions and observation activities. However, limited practical learning media and the lack of training related to preservation techniques have become challenges faced by teachers.

Through this program, teachers received theoretical training through workshops on animal specimen preservation techniques, including wet preservation, dry preservation, and slide preparation methods. In addition, participants also took part in hands-on practice sessions and simulations for preparing specimens as Biology learning media.

The training activities did not stop at the practical stage alone. The community service team also conducted mentoring and monitoring sessions to help teachers gain a deeper understanding of preservation processes, including specimen storage techniques and the effective use of practical learning media in the classroom.

Activity Documentation

Interestingly, the use of preserved specimens in Biology learning not only helps students understand concepts visually, but also increases curiosity, encourages teamwork during practical activities, and enhances students’ interest in natural sciences.

This program also represents a form of support for improving teacher professionalism, as stated in Law No. 14 of 2005 and Ministerial Regulation of National Education No. 16 of 2007 regarding teacher competencies.

Through this training, it is hoped that teachers will be able to independently, creatively, and sustainably develop Biology Science learning media, making the learning process more engaging and meaningful for students.
